Universal Garage Door Remote

 Choosing a replacement

Finding a replacement for your broken and faulty garage door remote control is trouble free. You may, of course, choose to have it repaired if this is possible. If, however, your vendor or repair shop confirms that your device is beyond economical repair then a new replacement may be necessary.

If your existing remote control cannot be repaired, or you want to combine a couple of devices into one, then there are two options for replacing it:

a) choose to purchase a manufacturer's original model. Or;

b) pick a third party garage door remote control.

Whilst many consumers choose to go with a genuine manufacturer's remote, others may choose a third party device due to either the lower price and/or availability.

Availability

Sometimes manufacturers choose to discontinue old product lines because technology has changed and devices have become obsolete. Garage doors, for instance, have an operating life. They are expected to last a finite amount of time because they need replacing. They can be repaired but many consumers tend to replace them anyway with newer garage doors. Trends and styles also change. The resale value of a house may be adversely affected by having old style doors. Manufacturers are aware of this and as less consumers purchase older consumables such as remotes, they tend to discontinue older ranges because it isn't always cost effective to continue to manufacturer them.

Sometimes universal remote controls are the only ones that can fit a particularly old system.

Your system

A full device can be fitted retrospectively to existing doors. This requires fitting a remote control receiver kit. It is recommended that a trained professional specialist fits the system. Universal devices can be programmed to work with a wide range of systems. Automatic garage doors are connected to a motor which drives a chain that moves the door up and down.

Multi openers

Universal openers can be configured to work with more than one device. Fobs usually have at least one and, sometimes, up to three buttons. If your home has both an automatic gate and automatic garage doors then a single fob can be set to operate both of these devices.

Conclusion

So if you're thinking of replacing your faulty or broken garage door remote control or you want to combine two or more remotes into one then a universal device would be a good option. Always check whether your current make and model is compatible with the universal system that you are considering purchasing.
