How to Do a Gate Repair

There are many reasons why you may need a gate repair. Troubleshooting what is wrong with the gate will let you know what you need to repair. A sagging gate can be a result of loose hinges, an out-of-square gate frame or wobbly posts. Most times gates begin sticking because they are retaining moisture, and the result is that the gate is becoming unaligned, which causes the hinges to loosen. The gate sags once the moisture is gone. Metal gates sag because the pins that hold the gate to the post are bent or posts are wobbly.

Step 1 - Check Stability of the Posts
The first step in troubleshooting a gate problem is to check the stability of the post that use to support the gate and other posts near the gate.  Ensure they do not wobble and they are plumb. Fence posts begin to wobble over time if their setting has become unstable or they were made of untreated wood.
Most times repairing the posts will fix your gate problems. You can secure an unstable post with or splints or stakes, but only if the post itself is still in good condition. Ensure the stakes are treated with a preservative to prevent decomposing. Secure together with bolts running through the post from one stake to the other.

Step 2 - Check Quality of Hinges
Hopefully, your post does not wobble, and the issue is with the hinges. Check the hinges to see if they might be bent, lose or too lightweight for your gate. Changing hinges is relatively easy. You may also be able to fix your problem by just changing the screws that are attached to the hinges of your gate.
If the hinges are unattached, but it appears to be in good condition, try removing the screws and filling the holes with dowel plugs the size of the original screw holes. Replace the hinges, using carriage bolts or longer screws.

Step 3 - Check Whether Gate Frame is Square
If the posts do not wobble, check to see whether the gate frame itself is still square. If not, you can square it again by making use of wire and heavy-duty turnbuckles. Attach wire to screw eyes in the gate or fence framework at angles and place the turnbuckles in the center of the diagonal, tightening to square the frame or the fence.

Doing a gate repair yourself may be time-consuming but hiring a gate repair company might be the best option.
