Gates and Your Property Access Points

Owning property comes with having to secure the outer edges of that property. Whether it be the perimeter walls and fences, simple walk through gates or automatic drive through gates, we as owners will have to make sure that these security devices, even if it is just as simple as a padlock or a latch, are operating correctly at all times. Meaning we may have to check them ourselves or put trust in someone to do it for us. Either way, this is part of owning the property in the first place and keeping it secure. Some properties can be small to average, like track homes in residential communities and some can be quite large, like estates that may have acres to control. Most of us that own property more than likely already have this in mind and do realize that a solid security system is in our best interest.

Securing property is not always about keeping the riff-raff out but, quite possibly, keeping what we cherish most, like children or animals safe inside the property. Realizing this...most owners, if they choose, can repair most of the issues that come up themselves. Whether they put in the security system on their own or purchased the property all set up, they should have information on any elaborate system(s) that has been installed. Most of the more common issues that arise are:

Alignment problems with any track type automatic gate devices
Hinge side or strike side jamb support, coming loose from its structure
Detioration or complete failure of gate itself
Substrate on which it is built is failing
All these points above need a good assessment to actually determine what the problem is but, just by evaluating the opening, owners should be able to tell if they themselves can repair it or have to hire it out.
The security we speak of here is walls, fences and the openings (gates) that go through them, the perimeter of the property. In a later edition we may speak about security systems that are more controlled by electronics, like alarms / video.

I have been repairing a wide variety of issues in the home now for 20+ years and would like to spread some of my knowledge to anyone interested in home repair.
